The Grayble Social Club

Our Story

A club built because the opportunities ran out, and the people who make sure they do not run out again.

From our founder

It started with one unfair thing.

I have spent over ten years teaching in special education. It is the most rewarding job I can imagine. Every day I learn something from the young people I work with. But the longer I did it, the more I noticed something that I could not let go of.

The support is there when they are children. Then they turn eighteen, and it quietly disappears. The clubs stop. The invitations stop. Young adults who had a full week suddenly have empty evenings, and their world gets smaller at exactly the age everyone else’s is opening up. That is not fair. It has never been fair.

The person who made me stop talking about it and actually do something was my brother-in-law, Michael Gray. He is my inspiration, and the club carries his family name. That is where the Grayble in The Grayble Social Club comes from. I wanted somewhere Michael and people like him could walk in and simply belong.

So we started one. The Grayble Social Club is for adults aged 18–35 with special needs, built around MLD but open wider than that. If someone has a more severe need and comes with a 1:1 carer, they are welcome, and their carer comes along free. Nobody is turned away because of what they need.

What I did not expect was how quickly it stopped being mine. Members choose what we do. They plan the activities, they run sessions themselves, they tell us when an idea is rubbish. We have done crafts and discos, VR and mocktails, team games, Halloween, and we made a music video together. The best nights are always the ones somebody else thought of.

That is really the whole point. Not a service delivered to people, but a club that belongs to its members, where they have a say, a role, a community, and friends who are pleased to see them walk through the door.

We are still growing, and there is still not enough out there for SEN adults in our community. But there is more than there was. Join us on the adventure, because together we ARE able.

Every one of us is a volunteer

Nobody on this page is paid. Every session is run by volunteers who show up after work, around their own families, because they believe our members deserve somewhere to go. What the club takes in goes back into the club: the hall, the refreshments, the activities.

The people who show up

Together we can make a difference

Some of us are family, some of us started as volunteers and never left. What we share is a conviction that club night should be something our members look forward to all week.

Our mission

To deliver excellent social opportunities within our local community.

Through the core values of equality, respect, inclusiveness, valuing difference, empowerment, education and participation, coming along to The Grayble Social Club will enable young adults to explore the interaction between themselves, their peers and the local community. We provide this by creating a structure that supports equal opportunities within a safe, dynamic, creative and innovative social environment.

  • To create a sense of responsibility among the members
  • To involve our members in the process of choosing and creating activities
  • To enhance the healthy growth and development of adults
  • To promote social activities
  • To provide opportunities to young adults to make good use of leisure time
  • To develop hidden talents and potentials among our members
